Information:
A repository for all the historical information pertaining to British telecommunications, the BT Archives is situated in the Holborn area of central London, and open to public researchers on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm. This fascinating chronological collection of records includes minutes, subject files, photographs, film and advertising material relating to the development of telecommunications in the UK, from the first private telegraph and telephone companies in the 19th century through to the present day. The collection of telephone books dating from 1880 is particularly useful for those doing genealogical research. Another highlight is the historic photographic and film archive of BT and the Post Office, dating back to the last century, which includes images of old equipment, engineers and telephone operators at work, old vehicles and street scenes. The BT Archives at 268-270 High Holborn can be easily reached from the Chancery Lane or Holborn Underground stations.
