Information:
The antithesis to historic London, Canary Wharf is a vast modern office and shopping development in East London. Construction on the regeneration project began in 1988 on the site of the old West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs. The name 'Canary Wharf' harks back to the old docks' connection with the Canary Island fruit trade. Canary Wharf boasts some of London's tallest buildings, most notably One Canada Square, presenting a breathtaking cityscape from the River Thames, which flows in front of the development. The office towers were built mainly to provide homes for major banks, which became central to the 2009 'Credit Crunch' scandal. The Docklands Light Railway and an Underground station on the Jubilee Line bring thousands of people each day to enjoy the ultra-modern precincts of Canary Wharf and its state-of-the-art shopping centre. In addition, 30 buses an hour and four car parks serve Canary Wharf.
