Information:
For those who enjoy nautical history, The Golden Hinde, moored at Pickford's Wharf, Clink Street, London, provides a memorable 'living history' experience. The replica of the ancient warship that took Sir Francis Drake on his circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580 gives fascinating insight into the travails of these intrepid explorers. Sir Francis left Plymouth in 1577 with a charter from Queen Elizabeth I allowing him to attack and loot ships of the enemy. As privateers, Drake and his men took her at her word and accumulated many treasures during their epic voyage, losing all their fleet except for the Golden Hinde on the way. The replica ship, launched in 1973 as a charity-driven 'museum ship', has also circumnavigated the globe, and is open to the public between 10am and 5.30pm daily. Self-guided tours are offered. The ship can be reached from Underground stations London Bridge and Monument.
