Information:
The Guildhall Art Gallery houses the art collection of the City of London, which comprises royal portraiture, battle scenes and period views of the city. Of the 4000 collected works by celebrated British and European artists, only 250 paintings are exhibited at any one time. Significant artists include the Pre-Raphaelites, John Constable, Edwin Landseer, James Tissot and John Everett Millais, but it is the sizeable work by John Singleton Copley, 'The Defeat of the Floating Batteries in Gibraltar', which dominates the gallery. The collection is accommodated in a semi-gothic building constructed in 1999 on the original site of a Roman amphitheatre, and replaces the bombed out remains of a building virtually destroyed in WWII. Situated in the Guildhall Yard, adjacent to the historic Guildhall in the centre of London, the Gallery is within walking distance of Bank, St Paul's, Mansion House - Bow Lane exit - and Moorgate tube stations.
