Information:

Back in the 1820s, Britain was a little embarrassed by not having an impressive national art collection like its European counterparts, so the British Government bought a collection of just 36 paintings from a wealthy banker. This kicked off what grew to become a proud national collection, housed behind the impressive façade of the National Gallery fronting Trafalgar Square in central London. The building, designed for its purpose by William Wilkins in the 1830s, is actually the third to have housed the national collection, which began life in a town house. The National Gallery collection consists of around 2,300 paintings, but its lack of size is made up for in scope and substance. It allows the public free viewing, every day, of an array of important works by the likes of Rembrandt, Monet, Turner and Titian, detailing the development of Western art. The closest London Underground station is Charing Cross.
