Information:
The Novello Theatre in Aldwych - heart of London's West End theatre district - was built in 1905. The classic building, with its extravagant gilded interior decor, was designed by W.G.R. Sprague, who designed 33 theatres during his illustrious career. The Novello was originally called the Waldorf Theatre, renamed in 2005 after a refurbishment as a tribute to the renowned actor and composer, Ivor Novello, who lived in a flat above the Theatre between 1913 and 1951. The Theatre was bombed in 1940 during the Blitz, but, in true theatrical tradition, the show went on, the actors picking their way through rubble to perform lunchtime Shakespeare concerts, and then triumphed with a record-breaking run of 1,337 performances of Arsenic and Old Lace between 1942 and 1946. Today, audiences are still being wowed with hit productions. The nearest Underground stations, a short stroll from the Novello, are Covent Garden, Charing Cross and Holborn.
