Information:
No longer used as a theatre in the true sense of the world, Peacock Theatre, in Portugal Street, Aldwych, London's West End, is now part of the London School of Economics and Political Science campus. It serves as a venue for conferences, seminars, and pop concerts. A theatre was built in the 17th century on the site, earning its place in London theatrical history by having a woman perform on stage for the first time. One Mrs Hughes took part in Othello in 1660. Destroyed by fire in 1809, the Theatre was rebuilt a century later, opening in 1911. In 1957 the building was demolished to make way for an office block. The indomitable theatre would not die - in 1960 it re-emerged in the office building's basement as a dance venue for the Sadler's Wells Company. Peacock is close to Holborn Underground Station on the Central and Piccadilly lines.
