Information:
Like most of the famous vintage theatres in London's West End, Shaftesbury Theatre has seen its fortunes fluctuate and its name change over the decades since it opened in 1911, as the New Princes' Theatre. The impressive stone frontage, designed by Bertie Crewe has, however, remained largely unchanged, and still dominates the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and High Holborn in the heart of the West End. It has survived war time bombings and the frightening collapse of its ceiling back in 1973, which brought to an end the 2000-performance-long run of the controversial musical Hair. Shaftesbury Theatre has brought delight to generations of theatre-goers, featuring top musicals such as West Side Story, Hairspray and Flashdance. The current theatre capacity is 1,400, including eight architecturally notable bow-fronted boxes. Centrally located, the Shaftesbury is close to three Underground stations - Tottenham Court Road, Holborn and Covent Garden, and served by numerous bus routes.
