A tradition of free speech has been upheld for more than 150 years in a specially designated area in the north-east corner of London's Hyde Park, alongside Marble Arch. Here, anyone is allowed to set up a soap-box and give vent to their feelings on almost any subject. The only constraints are lewdness and profanity, and speakers are open to some hectic heckling from their audience on occasion. Through the years, Speaker's Corner has rung with the words of movers and shakers like Karl Marx, Lenin, George Orwell and William Morris. This entertaining oratorical spectacle draws daily crowds of visitors that are either amused or incensed by this unique brand of street theatre. Sunday mornings seem to bring out the best of the bunch, so this is the best time to visit Speaker's Corner, which is opposite Marble Arch Underground station at the corner of Park Lane and Cumberland Gate.
