Information:
Situated in Kew, in the South West London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, The National Archives is housed in a building that opened in 1977 as an extra repository for public records, then kept at a location on Chancery Lane. This government department maintains the national archive for the central UK government, England and Wales. The National Archives contains a thousand years of UK history, from the time of the Domesday Book to present day, and includes everything from paper and parchment scrolls to digital files and websites. There are documents from 12th-century central law courts, medieval central government records, a significant collection of plans, architectural drawings and maps, and family histories, including criminal records, wills and naturalisation registers. Admission is free, and the closest Underground and overground station is Kew Gardens, on the District Line, a 10-minute walk away. The R68 bus route stops at The National Archives' entrance.
